Shakib returns as Bangladesh ODI captain for Asia Cup and World Cup

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed Shakib Al Hasan as the team’s ODI captain for the upcoming Asia Cup and World Cup. The all-rounder left the position in October of the previous year, citing personal reasons.

“Shakib Al Hasan will lead Bangladesh in the World and Asia Cup. He had previously resigned from the position for “personal reasons.” Still, after talking with him, he consented to captain the team in the two competitions, according to BCB President Nazmul Hassan.

Currently considered the best all-around player in ODIs, Shakib has played 49 ODIs for Bangladesh, winning 26 and losing 21. He has led the team to victories in one Test and two T20Is out of eight T20Is and eight Tests, respectively.

Bangladesh advanced to the Super 10 round of the 2016 World T20 and earned a spot in the 2017 Champions Trophy while he served as captain. They finished second in the 2018 Asia Cup as well.

The 32-year-old all-arounder has recently been in fantastic shape. It was the top scorer for the Dhaka Dynamites in the 2018–19 Bangladesh Premier League, hitting 617 runs in 16 games at an average of 41.13. He was also the tournament’s top wicket-taker with 20 wickets at an average of 12.85.

Mushfiqur Rahim, who captained Bangladesh in the recently finished tri-nation series between Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, and Afghanistan, will hand over the leadership to Shakib. Bangladesh was eliminated from the competition after dropping all three games in the series.

While the World Cup will be staged in England and Wales next year, the Asia Cup will be held in the United Arab Emirates in September.
